Damage assessment.

Damage to the people.

Our recent forefathers have devised means to survive and thrive in a given amount of real estate (planet Earth). In order to do so, we have to constantly fight to protect what we already have and or to increase our amount of space and keep it. About five thousand years ago, it was discovered that to be able to make soldiers out of our children we had to create a certain environment which would insure the propagation of violent behavior. The most effective method of going about this is to create a climate of fear and anger during the gestation and growth of a human. If a pregnant woman drinks alcohol regularly during here pregnancy, she can give birth to an alcoholic baby; the same is true for users of cocaine and heroine. When a person is angry or afraid, adrenaline, a very powerful drug, circulates in the blood stream and if a woman is pregnant, here baby is exposed to this drug. If this exposure is too frequent, she runs the risk of giving birth to a very aggressive child.

Ancient wisdom dictated the procedure to follow to raise healthy children in mind body and spirit and we replaced it with a philosophy of punishment for wrongdoing, an eye for an eye. The result is a society that thrives on violence and a power struggle that is nearer than ever to destroying the entire population of the earth and most of its plants and animals.

Our passion for control of our environment and the way people think and act towards one another as led to this situation and continues to govern our social decision making process. No one ever asks how a decision will affect the future. Our children are now realizing that they do not have a very bright future and are rebelling by refusing to participate in our collective suicide. Their broken heart is causing a substantial decrease in their immune systems ability to fight off diseases and an ever increasing number of them are getting sick or committing suicide. We have essentially taken hope out of our children's life and replaced it with despair. We tell our children to get an education but they know that even with a good education their chances to succeed are not very good.

Damage to the environment.

Our Scientists and native Elders are warning the population and the governments about the damage to our environment. The ozone layer is so severely depleted that climatic changes are now inevitable. Our comfortable lifestyle, our transportation system and our culture of consumption at any cost are in the process of destroying the life support system of our planet. I am wondering how a spaceship captain would react if, during a long flight, he found that some of the crew members and passengers were taking the life support system apart and using the materials to make trinkets to sell to each other in order to make their life more comfortable. That essentially is what is happening on planet earth.

Future generations will have to do with fewer resources to deal with a far more hostile environment. The combustion of fossil fuels combined with the increased amount of energy entering the atmosphere due to the ozone layer no longer protecting it from Ultra Violet radiation, is increasing the temperature of the atmosphere and the oceans.

Already there are signs of what the future has in store for us. My personal observations led to the discovery that certain types of plants can no longer resist Ultra Violet radiation. Cucumbers, potatoes, tomatoes and the birch tree are all plants that have thin leaves. On sunny early summer's days, when there is no wind to cool them off, they wilt in the sun. Some of the plants recover from such sunburns but are weakened and can not resist infections and or parasites; some trees lose their foliage and produce a second foliation. If refoliation occurs more than two years in a row, the tree dies. This is the case for the birch tree and the explanation for its gradual disappearance. The maple tree, the apple tree and some of our nut trees are in great danger. The damaged vegetation dries out quickly and becomes fuel for forest and brush fires. Every year I notice that our fruits and nuts are getting smaller .

Ultra Violet radiations are causing a massive increase in genetic mutations in all aquatic life forms. Such mutations in microscopic organisms will create new infectious diseases capable of killing living organisms including humans. Early signs of this will be massive fish die-off. Another serious problem is the increase of the temperature of the water due to the amount of energy absorbed by the water because the plankton that was transforming it into food is now being killed by Ultra violet radiation. This is one of the main reasons for climatic changes; it will cause a significant increase in the frequency and violence of storms and, eventually render some parts of the world inhabitable.
